About the Artist

          Billie Pass

“My grandfather had a horse named Billy. I never found out if I was named for the horse or the horse was named after me”.

Billie is a self taught artist who’s love of drawing horses  started when she was three years old.

Billie has had a passion for and an involvement with horses for most of her life.  She has worked as a Horse Trainer, Riding Instructor and been a Judge at various equestrian events.
She says that those experiences are what taught her the most about what her art has become. “How the horse moves, where the muscles are, how they hold their heads and observing their moods has taught me how to draw my horses.”

Twenty years ago she began creating her stylized horses on ceramics,
broken pottery, rocks, anything she found that held ‘the spirit of the horse within’.  Her style was influenced by Chinese brush painting.  She says the flowing movement in the style brought the horses to life.

From ceramics, broken pottery, rocks ,etc her art moved to painted feathers, leather , Christmas ornaments.  All embellished with horses.   At that point the light came on.  People liked the horses and wanted to buy them.

In 2000 Billie was introduced to the world of Gourds and a new relationship was begun.  The Gourds became a new canvas for her horses.  Shortly there after she began showing and selling her work at equestrian events in Nevada and New Mexico where she and
her art were well received.  Soon, she  began showing at various Gourd Festivals and PowWows in California where she has been received with equal enthusiasm.

Billie’s’ horses are unique.  Not truly ‘primitive’, however, they have a simplicity about them yet they definitely have life and movement.
One viewing her work can ‘feel’ the spirit of the horse.
Watching her at work is quite amazing.  The horses seem to simply ‘flow’ onto the Gourds.  She truly carries the spirit of the horse within herself.
